Journey to the Cross

Pause

Repeat the following three times. After you have finished, ponder one thing you can rejoice in today:

Breathe in: “This is the day that the Lord has made.”

Breathe out: “I will rejoice and be glad in it.”

Listen

It was still the first day of the week. That evening, while the disciples were behind closed doors because they were afraid of the Jewish authorities, Jesus came and stood among them. He said, “Peace be with you.” After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. When the disciples saw the Lord, they were filled with joy.

John 20:19-20

Think

What a day for the disciples! First Mary Magdalene astounds them with reports of an empty tomb and the breathless pronouncement, “I have seen the Lord!” Then Peter and the beloved disciple confirm that yes, the tomb is indeed empty. What was happening?

We see they did what many often do when life stops making sense. They hid themselves away behind locked doors. They huddled together with their own, fearing what the next knock at the door might bring.

Enter then, Jesus. Not through the door, or a window, or even the roof. He simply appeared in their midst, confirming the amazing stories Mary, Peter, and the beloved disciple had told. Jesus appeared in their midst offering peace. And so of course their response was not simply joy, but great joy. No, the world didn’t make sense, but that, perhaps, was the best news of all. Death no longer had a hold over this world. Jesus was here, alive, bringing words of peace. Praise the Lord indeed!

Question to Ponder:

How would it feel to have Jesus show up in the midst of what you fear?

Pray

God of surprises, sometimes what happens in my life doesn’t make any sense. Today I want to hide away from…

Thank you for showing up for me even when I am trying to hide away in fear. Thank you for offering me your peace and giving me reasons to shout for joy. Amen.

Go

This IS the day that the Lord has made. Listen for the ways God’s creation offers up its praise. Then add your voice to the song, giving praise for all God has done.
