Ordinary Time

Pause

God has told you, human one, what is good and what the Lord requires of you: to do justice, embrace faithful love, and walk humbly with your God.

Micah 6:8

That’s quite a goal!

Amidst that good work, rest and listen for God’s guidance here along the way.

Listen

But can anyone know what they’ve accidentally done wrong? Clear me of any unknown sin and save your servant from willful sins. Don’t let them rule me. Then I’ll be completely blameless; I’ll be innocent of great wrongdoing.

Psalm 19:12-13

Think

Psalm 19 begins with praise: “The heavens are declaring God’s glory. The sky is proclaiming God’s handiwork!” I am daily awed by that natural wonder in breezes sweeping across the tide, autumn harvests of green beans planted mid-summer, or morning birdsong awakening.

God has humbled us with dominion to steward our world. How are we doing with that goal?

In today’s verses, the psalmist seeks absolution, recognizing both sins of commission (things we know we’ve done) and omission (both things we’re part of and have failed to take responsibility for and things we’ve failed to do).

God knows both our personal sin and our collective sin for systems of hurt and destruction in our world. With climate change, pernicious injustice, and human need ever growing in our world, what if we claimed our sin, confessed it, and sought God’s help in not letting it rule over us?

Unburdened by God’s freedom, then, may we choose handiworks of justice, mercy, and love to reign our actions, stewarding our world and serving each other more gloriously today.

Question to Ponder:

What is it that I need to confess today, trusting that God knows me, loves me, and wants to use me for God’s goodness?

Pray

Gracious and Loving God, help me to let your grace and love rule over me today.

In my choices today, guide me towards taking responsibility, reaching out, and stewarding a more gracious, connected, and cared-for world.

Amen.

Go

This is my prayer: that your love might become even more and more rich with knowledge and all kinds of insight.

Philippians 1:9

There’s so much to learn and enjoy of the depth of God’s love.

Embrace a goal of seeking and serving afresh today.
