Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no danger because you are with me. Your rod and your staff— they protect me.
Psalm 23:4
Even before the storm officially rolls in, my dog knows when thunder is coming; she can feel it. She begins by pacing. The pacing turns into a frantic search for an escape. When she can’t find a place that hides her, she tries to create one. Fear overtakes her. She starts digging at doors. Thunder creates her own personal darkest valley, one where she doesn’t know if the sun will ever reach her again.
The darkest valley has been a powerful metaphor that has captured the imaginations of so many artists, poets, musicians, and songwriters. It’s so powerful because it’s raw and we can all relate to it.
But what is most important for us to know is that in this psalm we aren’t left in the valley. We are moved through it. We don’t need to let fear overtake us because God goes with us into those spaces. God is with us with rod and staff to guide us to the other side. Eventually the sun will shine on you again.

Abiding God, help me know that, while you never promise an easy road, you do promise to go with each of us. Help me trust in that promise of protection. Encourage me to live boldly. Amen.
Those who find me find life; they gain favor from the Lord.
