Ordinary Time

Pause

He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.

Psalm 23:3 (New King James Version)

Listen

When they landed, they saw a fire there, with fish on it, and some bread. Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you’ve just caught.” Simon Peter got up and pulled the net to shore. It was full of large fish, one hundred fifty-three of them. Yet the net hadn’t torn, even with so many fish. Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples could bring themselves to ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came, took the bread, and gave it to them. He did the same with the fish. This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead.

John 21:9-14

Think

Food certainly has a restorative effect on us. Favorite comfort foods improve our moods, soups and home remedies relieve our symptoms when we are sick, and holiday meals strengthen the bonds of love we have with family and friends.

This simple breakfast meal Jesus has prepared for the disciples is no different. Jesus offers to restore them by feeding their hunger, both physically and spiritually. The joy of Jesus’ presence alone is enough to fill the disciples’ hearts to bursting, inspiring them to fulfill the missionary work that will soon be set before them. What a blessing this meal must have been!

Thankfully, Jesus continues to invite us to partake of similar blessings in our lives every day. When we feed the hungry, visit the sick and imprisoned, or love one another as Christ loves us, we accept the invitation to not only help the Lord restore others but also to be restored ourselves.

Go

Forsake foolishness and live, and go in the way of understanding.
