From the time we are children, we try to determine when and where safety can be counted on. That doesn't mean we don't take chances, even dangerous ones.

But we can be sure that safety is always found wherever God is. That doesn't mean life isn't dangerous, however.

In a dangerous world, find your safe place now, quietly, in the heart of God.

Listen

I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. I am not asking you to take them out of the world, but I ask you to protect them from the evil one. They do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. As you have sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, so that they also may be sanctified in truth.

John 17:14-19

Think

There are probably a number of reasons that “The Avengers” is the hottest movie around right now. For one, lots of folks have been waiting a long time to see it made. It’s the kind of movie that sells well this time of year too, full of action and special effects.

But its appeal also lies in the vicarious thrill of watching people with superpowers overcome world-endangering threats. I mean, who wouldn’t like to have one of those high-tech suits worn by Iron Man? In our dangerous world, however, no such powers protect us.

But Jesus says we are protected by truth – God’s truth. With so much evil around, our best defense is to depend on truth, just as Jesus did.

Pray

God, I want to know the truth. Help me to see your truth and to depend on it, just as I depend on you to care for me. Amen.

Go

There is a place of quiet rest,
Near to the heart of God;
A place where sin cannot molest,
Near to the heart of God.

O Jesus, blest Redeemer,
Sent from the heart of God,
Hold us who wait before you
Near to the heart of God.
