Ordinary Time

One of the first Christians wrote, “There are two ways, one of life and one of death—and there is a great difference between these two ways.”

Today you face a choice about the way to live.

Listen

“Happy are people who have pure hearts, because they will see God.

“Happy are people who make peace, because they will be called God’s children.”

Matthew 5:8-9

Think

I love to visit old homes and historic buildings. The windows in these buildings are very different from modern windows. Generally, the older the building is, the more difficult it is to see through the windows. Old glass has many impurities which make it difficult to see outside. Glassmaking technology has improved over time, so now windows are completely transparent. We can be inside a building and have a crystal-clear view of the outside world.

In an old building, there is still a world outside the windows—it’s just difficult to see that outside world. In the same way, Jesus tells us in today’s scripture that a pure heart is necessary to see God. God is always present in our lives. When our lives are clouded by sin, we can’t always see God at work. When the way we live matches God’s desire for us, this purity of heart makes us sensitive to God’s activity all around us. It’s like we can “see” God at work!

Question to Ponder:

Where do you see God at work right now?

Pray

God who is near, help me to avoid sin and follow the path of Jesus. I want my heart to be purer, so that I can see you and experience your glory. Amen.

Go

Go to live in the love of God, the way of Jesus, and the peace of the Holy Spirit.
