Ordinary Time

Pause

Create a clean heart for me, God;
put a new, faithful spirit deep inside me!
Return the joy of your salvation to me
and sustain me with a willing spirit.

Psalm 51:10,12 (ESV)

Give me pause to see and feel your glory every day.

Listen

As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them not to tell anyone what they had seen until after the Human One had risen from the dead.

Mark 9:9

Think

Have you ever gotten instructions to do something and yet you are not sure why, nor do you understand the instructions given? After a spiritual spectacle on the mountaintop, Jesus tells his friends not to tell anyone what has happened in this place until the “human one has risen from the dead”. Peter, James, and John have no idea why they cannot tell anyone about this moment, especially knowing how special it was. They might also be terrified of what would happen if they did say something about their experience with Jesus to others.

Honestly, what would you say? With whom would you share this special moment?

Spiritual mountaintops and special moments like these are not for everyone. Often, we can’t even put our experience into words. Some things are really meant to be just for you. Our encounters with God can be something to ponder in silence when things might feel weird or out of our control.

Pray

Lord, I might not understand fully what has happened and I may never understand, but I know that I am allowed to have special moments, just for myself. Help me to draw strength and faith from them. Amen.

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God — what is good and acceptable and perfect.
