Ordinary Time

Pause

Create a clean heart for me, God;
put a new, faithful spirit deep inside me!
Return the joy of your salvation to me
and sustain me with a willing spirit.

Psalm 51:10,12 (ESV)

Give me pause to see and feel your glory every day.

Listen

From the rising of the sun to where it sets, God, the Lord God, speaks, calling out to the earth. From Zion, perfect in beauty, God shines brightly. Our God is coming; he won’t keep quiet. A devouring fire is before him; a storm rages all around him.

Psalm 50:1-3

Think

The magnificence of a winter sunrise is a sight to behold, as it breaks open the heavens, a fiery ball rising over the horizon, filling the dark blue-gray sky with all glorious shades of red, pink, orange, and yellow. Some mornings it is truly breathtaking.

The writer of this psalm likens the glorious presence of God to the rising sun. Just as we cannot keep the sun from rising and setting, day after day, God is persistently present, shining brightly. The images of the psalm are resounding with beauty and power. Such is God’s glory. Awe-inspiring.

But God’s presence is not just something to behold in awe from a distance. This is a God who is coming to us. God is speaking, calling out. God won’t keep quiet. Our God has something to say. Are you listening? Are you open to hear?

Pray

God of Glory and Light, I praise you for your strength and beauty, for your power and presence in this world. I want to learn to hear your voice. Speak, Lord. I am listening. Amen.

Go

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God — what is good and acceptable and perfect.
