Ordinary Time
Create a clean heart for me, God;
put a new, faithful spirit deep inside me!
Return the joy of your salvation to me
and sustain me with a willing spirit.
Psalm 51:10,12 (ESV)
Give me pause to see and feel your glory every day.
Peter reacted to all of this by saying to Jesus, “Rabbi, it’s good that we’re here. Let’s make three shrines—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” He said this because he didn’t know how to respond, for the three of them were terrified.
Mark 9:5-6
So, as you witness this scene – the transfiguration of Jesus – are you like Peter, needing to say something? Or are you more like the others, so stunned into silence that you have no words to say? Peter voices the importance of the moment and lets Jesus know that they understand how special this experience really is.
The making of the shrines is the photo that could not be taken. It commemorates the moment not just for the ones present but also for those that will hear about this experience and want to visit the place, like a landmark.
I love that the scripture points out that the disciples were terrified. How often do we think that no one feels like us? Having someone acknowledge that this is not “normal” goes a long way in settling our own hearts and minds.

God, I give thanks to those in my life that are like Peter and can speak to the fear I sometimes feel. I also give thanks for those who are stunned into silence too precious to move. Let me experience this awe and wonder in your presence. Amen.
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God — what is good and acceptable and perfect.
