Whenever Moses went into the Lord’s presence to speak with him, Moses would take the veil off until he came out again. When Moses came out and told the Israelites what he had been commanded, the Israelites would see that the skin of Moses’ face was shining brightly. So Moses would put the veil on his face again until the next time he went in to speak with the Lord.

Exodus 34:34-35

The veil is off when Moses is with his Beloved One. Nothing to hide. All is exposed and known. I wonder if you have a relationship like this in your life. Maybe a family member or friend. A trusted person who loves you after she or he has seen ALL of you — the good, the ugly, the oddities, the deepest hopes, the heavy worries, and everything in between. There is nothing to hide in this kind of intimate, most vulnerable relationship. There is love, acceptance, courage, and truth.

When Moses takes the veil off in the Lord’s presence, Moses is baring his soul. There is comfort, confidence, and unquestionable security. The God of Israel sees Moses, and Moses allows himself to be seen. The payoff is more than being known and accepted. The bigger – and even crazier – payoff is knowing the God of Israel. God of glory and truth, thank you for knowing me and loving me still. Help me to be changed by your love and to accept others with the grace and kindness that flows only from you. May being known by you ground my identity in your truth rather than whatever challenges and struggles come my way. Amen.
