About eight days after Jesus said these things, he took Peter, John, and James, and went up on a mountain to pray. As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed and his clothes flashed white like lightning. Two men, Moses and Elijah, were talking with him. They were clothed with heavenly splendor and spoke about Jesus’ departure, which he would achieve in Jerusalem. Peter and those with him were almost overcome by sleep, but they managed to stay awake and saw his glory as well as the two men with him.

As the two men were about to leave Jesus, Peter said to him, “Master, it’s good that we’re here. We should construct three shrines: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah”—but he didn’t know what he was saying.

Waking up to non-emergency phone call before 9 AM infuriates me. It’s immediately a bad day in my book. But waking up to the smell of coffee and bacon enlivens me, truly. It’s immediately a delightful day in my book.

In today’s passage from the good book, we have a different kind of wake-up call for Peter, John, and James. They are in the mountains praying with Jesus, nearly falling asleep, when they see the glory of Jesus like never before. Talk about a wake-up call!

Sometimes we all need those kinds of unbelievable, rub-my-eyes, did-that-just-happen experiences that will wake us up out of the grind of life and into the glory of the Holy One. This could be because of complacency, laziness, unhappiness, sadness, hopelessness, or anger… Whatever your grind in life might be, there is a different way of being and living.

Ask God to lead you into that different way. Today is a new day, and God’s mercies and loving kindness are new every morning. Are your ready to wake up to that?

Pray

God of glory and change, you are the One through whom my life can be different. Remind me today to pray for a change of heart. You alone know the reasons, and you alone are my strength and help. Amen.
