Journey to the Cross

Pause

God’s ways are not our ways.

Jesus said:

Happy are you when people insult you… You are the salt of the earth… Love your enemies… Don’t worry… It’s impossible for human beings. But all things are possible for God… The truth will set you free.

Matthew 5:11, 13, 44; 6:31; 19:26, John 8:32

Let’s seek God’s wisdom for our lives.

Listen

The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are being destroyed. But it is the power of God for those of us who are being saved. It is written in scripture: I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and I will reject the intelligence of the intelligent. Where are the wise? Where are the legal experts? Where are today’s debaters? Hasn’t God made the wisdom of the world foolish?

1 Corinthians 1:18-20

Think

Reason is what drew me into faith, where I found the wisdom of the cross. I sought sensible wisdom in books, lots of books with different viewpoints… I felt like I was making Christianity my own, and I wanted all the answers.

While I grew in understanding through my reading, I was also foolish. Today, I’ve learned that I won’t know it all, even as I keep studying.

What does the most for my faith is spending time with real Christians who share their real lives oriented toward the cross with me. We still reason together; we also wonder together.

I found that all of the deepest Christians spent significant time reading the Bible (a record of God’s wisdom) over other books and made time for prayer.

Living our faith together in community is more challenging than reading academic books alone all day – but wow! – it’s so much more alive.

Pray

God, I want real wisdom, not foolish wisdom. Sometimes your wisdom seems dry to me, and I look for things that make more sense. Would you send your Spirit and help me find real Christians to spend life with as we’re formed by your wisdom together? Amen.

Let the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be pleasing to you, Lord, my rock and my redeemer.
