Ordinary Time
Pause and imagine! “The Spirit of God and the Word of God are the fuel of your imagination. The key to the strongest and healthiest imagination is a daily quiet time.”
-Rick Warren
But I will remember the Lord’s deeds; yes, I will remember your wondrous acts from times long past. I will meditate on all your works; I will ponder your deeds. God, your way is holiness! Who is as great a god as you, God? You are the God who works wonders; you have demonstrated your strength among all peoples.
Psalm 77:11-14
Are you feeling worried and/or discouraged? Before answering, I want you to count your blessings. Whether you consider them big or small, list them. This exercise is about recognizing God’s greatness and strengthening your faith.
Psalm 77 reflects Asaph’s cry in the face of extreme distress and evidences his diligent search for God, regardless of his state of mind. Asaph, through his cry, expresses his fear of never again seeing favor, mercy, and the fulfillment of God’s promise. Interestingly, the psalmist argues with himself and tries to counteract his unbelief. Particularly, the expression “Selah” occurs three times in this psalm, opening a space of pause to reflect on the previous verses. I am captivated by how Asaph, between pauses, expresses his discomfort and weaves in an account of God’s wonders in his life and Israel’s history. I like to imagine Asaph recounting his blessings.
