Journey to the Cross
Obedience is not a popular word. We might think of it as something for children, not mature people. But “obedience” comes from the Latin word obedire, meaning “to listen,” a very adult thing to do. Take a deep breath, and open yourself to listen.
How can young people keep their paths pure? By guarding them according to what you’ve said. I have sought you with all my heart. Don’t let me stray from any of your commandments! I keep your word close, in my heart, so that I won’t sin against you.
Psalm 119:9-11
Psalm 119 is a special poem celebrating how God’s people can hear and obey God by “keeping God’s word close.”
In the northern hemisphere, it’s still that time of year when it’s a bit chilly, or even downright cold, depending on where you live. Warming up by a fire at a campsite or in your living room fireplace can feel so good. You need to stay close to the fire for it to thaw out your frozen toes or warm up your back. That’s the way it is with God. To keep our hearts warmed and full of light and love, we need to draw near to God.
By spiritual practices like reading scripture, praying, going to worship, serving others, and spending time with other Christians, you help keep out sin’s bone-chilling influence. God’s gracious presence keeps you connected and held warmly in love.

Question to Ponder:
What helps you draw near to God?
Holy God,
I trust the promise that when I draw near to you, you draw near to me.
Keep my heart close to you today so that I gladly listen and obey.
Amen.
Hear what God is nudging you to hear. Maybe it’s to pause before speaking, or to act boldly when you see someone wronged. Maybe it’s to love outside of your circle. Maybe it’s to love yourself. Take courage, and listen.
