Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father; that will be enough for us.”

Jesus replied, “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been with you all this time? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words I have spoken to you I don’t speak on my own. The Father who dwells in me does his works. Trust me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or at least believe on account of the works themselves.

Think

“Enough” is a tricky word. Especially in times like these, when our expectations and information change so rapidly, often we wonder if we are doing enough.

Phillip’s request seemed simple: just show us God, and that will be enough. But Jesus gets upset at this request. Phillip asks for Jesus to show God to them, and Jesus responds that he already has been. His entire life and ministry were showing them God.

Maybe Jesus wondered if he hadn’t done enough to make this clearer to his followers. The truth is that he did; he did more than enough. Those around him just chose not to pay attention.

It is so easy for us to get caught up in our own lives, and right now when things are extra chaotic, finding the space we need to pay attention is even harder to come by. It may seem difficult to see God right now, but God is definitely here, all around us. Have you been paying attention?

Almighty God, help me to see and feel your presence around me this day. May I be mindful of how you are working in and through me, and may I see you in others. Amen.
