Ordinary Time

Pause

Take a moment and imagine the spaces in your community that need the power of justice and love. What does the space look like? Who is present in those spaces? What can you do to create space to act there?

Listen

After these things, the Lord commissioned seventy-two others and sent them on ahead in pairs to every city and place he was about to go. He said to them, “The harvest is bigger than you can imagine, but there are few workers. Therefore, plead with the Lord of the harvest to send out workers for his harvest.

Luke 10:1-2

Think

Have you ever been asked to do something that felt overwhelming? Maybe it seemed like there was so much to be done and you felt overwhelmed, alone, and dreading the work ahead. Sometimes thinking about our work in the kingdom of God might feel like that as well. Yet, the words of Luke can give us hope.

While the harvest was bigger than anyone could imagine and there were few workers, none of them worked alone. Jesus sent them out in pairs to do the work that he had called them to do and encouraged them to invite others as well.

The presence of another person sharing the work can lighten the load, bring people together, and bring encouragement when the harvest keeps on growing. There are people in our communities and around the world doing the work, and we have all been commissioned to act together. Whether you see it or not, there are many people standing alongside you sharing the work of God.

Question to Ponder:

How will you share in the work of God with those around you?

Pray

God, allow me to see those who I share the work with. Help me to work with others for your good. One person I know who is working for you in the world is…

Remind me that I do not work or act alone. Amen.

Go

Go knowing that the Holy Spirit has created space for you to do the sacred work of bringing justice and love on earth as it is in heaven.
