Ordinary Time

Pause

Take a moment and imagine the spaces in your community that need the power of justice and love. What does the space look like? Who is present in those spaces? What can you do to create space to act there?

Listen

Come and see God’s deeds; his works for human beings are awesome: He turned the sea into dry land so they could cross the river on foot. Right there we rejoiced in him! God rules with power forever; keeps a good eye on the nations. So don’t let the rebellious exalt themselves.

Psalm 66:5-7

Think

Our psalm for today is remembering the story from Exodus of the Israelites crossing the Red Sea and their many years of wandering in the desert. In this story God creates space for the Israelites to act and be set free. Through creating this space God also created a pathway toward justice.

What once seemed like a dead end opened to a wide space for them to respond to the work of God in their midst. After the Israelites cross the sea in the Exodus story, Miriam, a prophet, goes out with a tambourine and sings to God for the space that has been created. All the other women join in praising God as well. They stop what they are doing to rejoice in that wide open space.

We too are invited to respond in such a way when God creates space in our lives to welcome others, act, dance, and wonder. We are invited into the echoing praise of Miriam and others who rejoice at the work of God.
