Ordinary Time
“O soul, are you weary and troubled?
No light in the darkness you see?
There’s light for a look at the Savior,
And life more abundant and free!”
“Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus,” Stanza 1
Send your light and truth—those will guide me! Let them bring me to your holy mountain, to your dwelling place. Let me come to God’s altar—let me come to God, my joy, my delight—then I will give you thanks with the lyre, God, my God!
Psalm 43:3-4
The wisdom of the psalms would have reminded the ancient Israelites of the need to recenter themselves regularly through acts of worship. Worship services provide the opportunity to intentionally focus on who God is, how we have been touched by the love of Jesus, and how the Holy Spirit calls us to continue acting in response.
Jesus was a servant leader. He showed God’s love by making space for others to experience it. Creating spaces of welcome for others, while important, can be exhausting. In Jesus’ ministry, we can see that he took moments for reflection and regeneration. Today, with the bustle of so many activities and the nuisance of social media feeds, we also need moments to pause.
At its best, worship is lived out through our daily lives. Worship services, however, provide an intentional space to reflect on God’s love, to appreciate the gift of grace, and to recommit ourselves to the work of Jesus. The daily work of following Jesus’ example is important. Don’t forget to pause and rejuvenate along the way.

Question to Ponder:
How can worship help me to recharge and reconnect with the love of God?
God of glory, I pause now to rest in your presence. I know that I live out my worship of you in my daily life. And yet, I realize the need to pause and acknowledge your love for me and my love for you. Grant me that moment now, I pray. Amen.
“Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face,
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of His glory and grace.”
