Ordinary Time

Pause

“O soul, are you weary and troubled?

No light in the darkness you see?

There’s light for a look at the Savior,

And life more abundant and free!”

“Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus,” Stanza 1

Listen

You are all God’s children through faith in Christ Jesus. All of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek; there is neither slave nor free; nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

Galatians 3:26-28

Think

In the musical, Oliver Twist, there’s a song called “Consider Yourself.” It is presented as Oliver, an orphan, is welcomed into a group of other orphans. They invite Oliver to consider himself “part of the furniture.”

This song has always made me think of bringing others into my home. I want them to know that they belong. I want them to feel like they have always been welcome and have somehow, though new, always been there—like my favorite comfy couch.

By following, or learning to follow, God’s call in our lives, we are all instantly “part of the furniture.” We are simultaneously invited to make ourselves at home, and equally responsible for helping others to feel welcome, too.

As we turn our eyes upon Jesus, the things of this world grow dim. It doesn’t matter if we’re new to faith or if we’ve been following Jesus for a long time. Those are “things of this world.” What matters most is our attentiveness to God and our willingness to help others come to know our servant savior.

Question to Ponder:

How can I help others feel at home in the family of God today?

Pray

You have made space for me, Lord, from before I even began to know you. I have always felt at home in your love. Grant me opportunities to help others feel the same way today. One way I can help others feel at home is…

Amen.

Go

“Turn your eyes upon Jesus,

Look full in His wonderful face,

And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,

In the light of His glory and grace.”
