Ordinary Time

Pause

On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand,
All other ground is sinking sand.

Edward Mote in “My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less” (1834)

Listen

Therefore, since we have been made righteous through his faithfulness, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. We have access by faith into this grace in which we stand through him, and we boast in the hope of God’s glory.

Romans 5:1-2

Think

Think about all the ways in which you work hard every day: you work hard to get good grades in school, to get a promotion at work, to get everything done on time, to practice your sport or instrument, to care for other people. We often spend our days working hard and striving to get something accomplished.

But we don’t have to work hard to earn God’s grace. In fact, God’s grace is already abundantly waiting for us. We don’t have to work hard to get to God. When we stand firm, we will see that God is trying to get to us. Do you know that God is trying to get to you?

God has placed our feet on solid ground, on the rock of Jesus Christ. Stand firm on this solid rock. You won’t be alone there.

Pray

God, help me to pause, stand still, and stand firm on the rock of Jesus Christ. As others trudge through the shifting sand, help me to pull them up onto the rock of your grace. Amen.

Go

There will be winds that blow against you, like storms against a lighthouse.

But go, knowing that the very Spirit of God is within you, stirring you to be brave, love always, and stand firm in God’s grace.
