Pause

I know the plans I have in mind for you, declares the Lord; they are plans for peace, not disaster, to give you a future filled with hope. When you call me and come and pray to me, I will listen to you. When you search for me, yes, search for me with all your heart, you will find me. I will be present for you, declares the Lord…

Jeremiah 29:11-14a

May you enter into God’s peace and presence afresh.

Listen

Lord, you have been our help, generation after generation. Before the mountains were born, before you birthed the earth and the inhabited world— from forever in the past to forever in the future, you are God.

Psalm 90:1-2

Think

Yosemite is my favorite refuge. I love being surrounded by mountainous granite walls, millions of years old and newness of life in birdsong, the Merced River flowing and aromatic pine wafting in the heat. But I needed help last summer! In the middle of the night, a bat was hiding in my cabin. Shaken up and startled (both me and the bat), I tried to get it out, but eventually had to call a staff member to help free it safely.

In today’s psalm, we’re reminded that God offers a refuge, a hiding place, a help, and has done so for generations, before the mountains of Yosemite were even born! From forever in the past to forever in the future, God is God, offering each of us that comforting embrace of love and grace.

What help do we need today? How might that fresh start of God’s freeing embrace startle us into loving action? What help can we offer afresh to another today? Whom can we be refuge for today?

Pray

Thank you, God, for your help. Thank you for choosing to be a refuge for both me and for generations.

Shake things up a bit today for me, helping me to choose to receive and offer to others your helping, sheltering, loving grace today.

Amen.

Go

Certainly the faithful love of the Lord hasn’t ended; certainly God’s compassion isn’t through! They are renewed every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

Lamentations 3:22-23

Whether it’s morning or evening in your day, God’s grace is dawning.

May you be renewed by that fresh start and choose to live out that compassion.
