They said to him, “Where’s your wife Sarah?”

And he said, “Right here in the tent.”

Then one of the men said, “I will definitely return to you about this time next year. Then your wife Sarah will have a son!”

Sarah was listening at the tent door behind him.

My wife and I met in graduate school. Now, 9 years later, we get mail from our school all the time, and it’s always addressed to me. She and I have the same degree from the same place, and yet they never include her in the mailing address. While mailing addresses may seem like a small deal, it’s really important that people are given their own identity.

This is a moment Sarah will never forget. This is her very own promise from God. In a world where the men got all the credit for things, God chooses to bless Sarah with the thing she had prayed about for so long.

“Where is your wife?”

“She’s right here!”

She is an active participant in this relationship. She was an active participant in the hospitality shown to these men that day.

God, I know our world often gives more credit to men than it does to women. Help me see all your children as equal partners in the world you’ve created. Help me tell the story of others. Amen.
