Ordinary Time

Pause

Take a moment to place yourself in a comfortable position.

Take a deep breath in, and slowly exhale. Do this as many times as you need to clear your mind.

Through scripture, reflection, and prayer, listen for the ways God is speaking to you.

Listen

That evening, at sunset, people brought to Jesus those who were sick or demon-possessed. The whole town gathered near the door. He healed many who were sick with all kinds of diseases, and he threw out many demons. But he didn’t let the demons speak, because they recognized him.

Mark 1:32-34

Think

It’s common throughout the gospels to find people bringing others to Jesus for healing. In this passage we find Jesus, seemingly in the thick of healing multiple people. Mark reminds us that healing is not just for some or just for a few. Healing is for anyone who will come. Mark also points out that healing is for “all kinds of diseases,” not just physical, like the mother-in-law’s fever, but also other illnesses and diseases and hurts. It is a reminder that not just one or two people need healing; everyone needs healing in one form or another. We need physical, spiritual, emotional, and social healing, to name just a few forms. We may be able to point out the need for healing, like the people who brought others to be healed. It often feels like there’s not much we can do besides stand and watch. How can we join Jesus’ healing work? We’re reminded that healing, of all forms, is for everyone. The healing that Jesus can give when we come (or are brought) is for the world.

Question to Ponder:

What can we learn when we stand and watch the healing work of Jesus in our world? How can we join Jesus’ healing work in our world?

Pray

God, thank you for being the one who heals not just one or two but all of those who are brought to you. There are so many in our world who need healing of all kinds, that sometimes all I can do is stand and watch. Grant me the wisdom to know when to bring someone or something to you for healing and when to come to you for healing. Help me to learn that in all things and all circumstances you are our source for strength and restoration. Amen.

When life feels too heavy to keep moving forward, may we remember our hope and strength are in Christ.
