Ordinary Time
The creator of heaven and earth knows you and wants to show care for your life every day.
Reflection on Psalm 27:4
Nearby were six stone water jars used for the Jewish cleansing ritual, each able to hold about twenty or thirty gallons.
Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water,” and they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, “Now draw some from them and take it to the headwaiter,” and they did. The headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine. He didn’t know where it came from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.
John 2:6-9a
Turning water into wine in the middle of a wedding may seem small to us today, but at the time, this miracle was of great importance to those in charge of the feast. From this passage, we can learn two key things.
First, for Jesus to work his miracle, we must be willing to follow his instructions, even though they may seem strange or illogical. The servants probably wondered many things as they filled the jars with water, but they obeyed what Mary told them (John 2:5), and that was crucial to seeing the manifestation of Jesus’ power.
Second, Jesus can use what seems common or insignificant to many to do something great in our lives. Through the simple, he glorifies himself and strengthens our faith to show us God’s power and care. Jesus can surprise you today!
