Ordinary Time

Pause

Dear friends, let’s love each other, because love is from God, and everyone who loves is born from God and knows God.

1 John 4:7

You are beloved as a member of the family of God, just as you are.

Listen

In the past, God spoke through the prophets to our ancestors in many times and many ways. In these final days, though, he spoke to us through a Son. God made his Son the heir of everything and created the world through him. The Son is the light of God’s glory and the imprint of God’s being. He maintains everything with his powerful message. After he carried out the cleansing of people from their sins, he sat down at the right side of the highest majesty.

Hebrews 1:1-3

Think

Sometimes I just want a worksheet for how to live faithfully — something with easy questions to refreshingly fill in. Bonus if we could earn a cosmic gold star reward on it!

Life in faith is more complex. But what can we discern from Hebrews here that might be a guide?

#1: What does Jesus, light of God’s glory…with his powerful message, choose to do with all that power and glory?
Answer from the text: He cleanses people of their sins.

#2: And when he’s done?
Answer: He sits down and chooses to be in communion with God.

#3: So, what’s his “powerful message”?
Inference: Forgive others and choose to seek to be with God.

Our Homework: Ask for and offer forgiveness. Then amidst the busyness of our lives, try to know and offer God’s light and love more fully.

Metaphoric Gold Star Sticker: In that communion with the triune God, we’d look beyond our own needs to the needs of the family of God more clearly. Hard work but yet so very rewarding, good work!

Pray

Loving God, you call the family of God to this good work. Help me to seek forgiveness and forgive others today. Help me to imagine the light everyone could add to the world if we chose anew to make these choices every day! Help me to imagine and feel the true radiance of that grace and your presence in my life today. Amen.

Go

This is love: it is not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son as the sacrifice that deals with our sins.

Dear friends, if God loved us this way, we also ought to love each other.

1 John 4:10-11

As a beloved member of the family of God, choose to be that love to our world today.
