Ordinary Time
The greatest story ever told, the story of God’s Kingdom, has a place for all.
You are a part of that story.
Rest in the assurance that you are a part of the story of God’s loving and life-giving kingdom.
He continued, “What’s a good image for God’s kingdom? What parable can I use to explain it? Consider a mustard seed. When scattered on the ground, it’s the smallest of all the seeds on the earth; but when it’s planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all vegetable plants. It produces such large branches that the birds in the sky are able to nest in its shade.”
Mark 4:30-32
In Liberia we have a saying, “drip, drip, fills the bucket.” What it means is that little things done consistently eventually grow into something big. The possibility of building God’s kingdom on earth as it is in heaven comes from consistent committed acts of doing justice, loving kindness, and walking humbly with God.
The story of God’s kingdom is filled with stories of faithful people repeatedly doing the small and necessary things to grow the kingdom. What started as a tiny mustard seed blossoms into a very big nurturing plant. With every little act of kindness, every act of justice, every act of empathy, and every act of love, we eventually build God’s kingdom big enough for all God’s people.
All of us, no matter our age or ethnicity or our wealth or upbringing, are capable of doing a small thing that helps tell the story of God’s kingdom. Ask yourself, what am I doing in the way I live to help tell the story of God’s kingdom? Am I doing it faithfully and consistently?
James Blay
Dear God, I want to help tell the story of your kingdom. I want to tell it in a way that is faithful and consistent by the way I live, love, and grow in the world. Amen.
Go, knowing God has empowered you to write your part in the greatest story ever told.
Go write a story of love; a story of justice; a story of mercy; a story of welcome; a story of peace.
