Ordinary Time
Savior, like a shepherd lead us,
much we need Thy tender care;
in Thy pleasant pastures feed us,
for our use Thy folds prepare:
blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
Thou hast bought us, Thine we are;
blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
Thou hast bought us, Thine we are.
Dororthy A. Thrupp in “Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us” (1836)
“My sheep listen to my voice. I know them and they follow me. I give them eternal life. They will never die, and no one will snatch them from my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them from my Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.”
John 10:27-30
Eternal life, life without end, is incredibly hard to fathom. At one time or another, we all experience the death of someone we care about. They are physically gone from us, and that physical loss and the pain it brings are very real. Jesus promises that he gives us eternal life, life that exists after our physical life here on earth ends. Jesus alone can offer this because he overcame sin and death when he died and was resurrected. Jesus promises there’s nothing that has the power to take us away from him if we are his. We are his from the moment we begin to follow him and after this life ends.
“When we take up permanent residence in a life of love, we live in God and God lives in us. This way, love has the run of the house… so that we’re free of worry on Judgment Day — our standing in the world is identical with Christ’s. There is no room in love for fear. Well-formed love banishes fear.” (1 John 4:17-18, The Message)

God, help me to remember that I belong to you.
Thank you that I can live without fear, knowing that not even death can separate me from your love.
Amen.
Go, cherished child of God, trusting in and listening to the Good Shepherd to guide and care for you.
