Pause

We are limited, every one of us. There is only so much we can know, so much we can do.

God is not like us. Limitless in time, space, and imagination, God is mighty in ways we cannot fully describe; we can only trust in God's unlimited power.

Power, in God's case, is expressed in unlimited love. Rest now in the all-encompassing love of the Almighty.

Listen

The Lord is king; let the peoples tremble! He sits enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth quake!

The Lord is great in Zion; he is exalted over all the peoples.

Let them praise your great and awesome name. Holy is he!...

Moses and Aaron were among his priests, Samuel also was among those who called on his name. They cried to the Lord, and he answered them....

Extol the Lord our God, and worship at his holy mountain; for the Lord our God is holy.

Psalm 99:1-3,6,9

Think

“Holy” is a word we hear a lot in church. But what does it mean? Simply put, “holy” means “set apart.” This doesn’t necessarily mean being physically separate, but rather to be different in one’s deepest self, in one’s way of being. To be holy is to be designated for a sacred purpose, set apart to live a life that does not look like others.

The Bible frequently praises God as holy. This makes sense — who would want to worship a God who was just like anyone else? We need God to be different than us and the standards we are used to. But what might it mean when God tells us to “be holy, as I am holy” (Leviticus 11:44)? Perhaps it means that we, too, are to live lives that look different, that are set apart from what is ordinary or standard, to serve a sacred purpose. What might it look like for you to live as a reflection of a holy God?

Pray

God, it is so much easier to live by typical habits and patterns than to try to be something different. This week, help me shine in ways that reflect how I am trying to live a life that is holy, set apart to serve you. Amen.

Go

Strong is the light that comes from our Creator,
Maker of heaven and earth.

Long is the way that leads from now to forever,
Yet we are not left alone.

Wherever you go and however you travel,
The strong arm of God
Is taking you home.
