Ordinary Time

Pause

Because you belong to Christ Jesus, God blesses you with peace that no one can completely understand.

Philippians 4:7 (CEV)

Listen

You set a table for me right in front of my enemies. You bathe my head in oil; my cup is so full it spills over! Yes, goodness and faithful love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the Lord’s house as long as I live.

Psalm 23:5-6

Think

There’s a reason that people have memorized the verses of Psalm 23 and spoken these words for generations and generations. They are words of comfort, assurance, and peace. And the reason they are comforting and can be trusted is because of the final verse; a reminder that God’s goodness and faithful love are always with us.

This proclamation of God’s love is echoed throughout scripture, not just as a hope on our end but as a promise on God’s end. No matter what the people of God go through, God’s love and kindness are there. From the very beginning in Genesis to the gospel of Jesus Christ to the end in Revelation there is one overriding and overwhelming theme – God’s love and kindness are always with us each day of our lives.

This is our source of peace. This is why we can have the peace of God in our lives: because we know God’s promise was true, is true, and always will be true.

Question to Ponder:

As you read through Psalm 23, what verse or verses bring you the most peace?

Pray

Loving God, I don’t always recognize that your love and kindness are with me. I can get so caught up in what I can’t control that I forget.

Thankfully, your love and kindness remain until I do remember, for you are always, without fail, with me.

Amen.

Go

May the peace of God surround you.

May the peace of Christ uphold you.

May the peace of the Holy Spirit sustain you.
