“Spirit of the living God, fall fresh on me.

Break me, melt me, mold me, fill me.

Spirit of the living God, fall fresh on me.”

“Spirit of the Living God” by Daniel Iverson

Listen

“I have much more to say to you, but you can’t handle it now. However, when the Spirit of Truth comes, he will guide you in all truth. He won’t speak on his own, but will say whatever he hears and will proclaim to you what is to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and proclaim it to you. Everything that the Father has is mine. That’s why I said that the Spirit takes what is mine and will proclaim it to you.”

John 16:12–15

Think

Has a guide ever helped you? Tour guides help us find our way, whether we’re exploring an art museum, a wildlife safari, or a new city. Other guides lead us to explore new concepts and skills. Teachers guide us into the truths of geometry and literature, and coaches guide us toward the beauty of soccer and dance.

The best guides know and love their subject deeply. They also know and love their audiences. A great museum guide loves art and wants guests to appreciate it in deeper ways. A great coach loves her game and her players.

Jesus calls the Spirit of Truth a guide. The Spirit loves the truth, and the Spirit loves us. As hard as it might be to believe, Jesus has even more to teach us than the four gospels contain! That’s why he sent us the Spirit as a reliable guide toward the truth. The Spirit loves God, loves Jesus, and loves us. As the Spirit proclaims the truth, our understanding and love for God grow together.

Question to Ponder:

In what ways have you sensed the Spirit guiding you?

Pray

Jesus, thank you for sending the Spirit of Truth to be my guide. Please give me ears to hear the Spirit’s proclamation about you, along with a mind to understand, a heart to receive, and hands and feet to obey.

Amen.
