Ordinary Time
Is it wind?
Is it breath?
Is it Spirit?
Calling out around me
Hovering across the waters
Making all things live
Making all things new
Making all things sing
When Pentecost Day arrived, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound from heaven like the howling of a fierce wind filled the entire house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be individual flames of fire alighting on each one of them. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages as the Spirit enabled them to speak.
Acts 2:1-4
When I was in divinity school, I took part in a multicultural immersion trip to Romania. While we were there we worshiped with other Baptists and visited various mission sites for the Roma people. No one in our group spoke Romanian. As a language it sounded and looked so different than the foreign languages we encounter in the United States. How many high schools even offer courses in Romanian?
Because of this vast difference in language I wondered how these worship services would go. How would we fit in? How would we understand anything? What if we stood up or sat down at the wrong time? Even worse, what if they ask us to sing?
At a worship service one evening they invited our group forward to do just that. The Romanian worship team let me use their guitar, and we began to play “How Great Is Our God.” As we started to sing, the whole place joined in — in both English and Romanian. In that moment we knew we were united in the Spirit. The Spirit has a way of bringing God’s people together.

Holy Spirit, breathe in me that I may better understand those around me. Fill my mouth with words of healing and harmony. Amen.
Breathe in, Breathe out
Breathe anew this day
Through the power and presence of the Spirit
Who goes with you
Every step of the way
