Ordinary Time

Pause

Is it wind?
Is it breath?
Is it Spirit?

Calling out around me
Hovering across the waters

Making all things live
Making all things new
Making all things sing

Listen

Peter stood with the other eleven apostles. He raised his voice and declared, “Judeans and everyone living in Jerusalem! Know this! Listen carefully to my words! These people aren’t drunk, as you suspect; after all, it’s only nine o’clock in the morning! Rather, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:

In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young will see visions. Your elders will dream dreams. Even upon my servants, men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.

Acts 2:14-18

Think

Good teachers help us understand. There have been times when I tried to solve a math problem but kept getting it wrong. I had all the information. I used all the concepts I had learned, but I still couldn’t make sense of the problem. I was stuck.

In these times when we are stuck, good teachers help us to see differently. To see what we’re missing. To see how to get unstuck.

In this moment of confusion, Peter steps in as teacher to explain what was happening. He demonstrates that what happened was not something that was only supernatural, it had real world consequences.

Sons and daughters will use their voice to speak for truth. Older men and women will dream dreams. Even those at the bottom of society — both women and men — will speak up. God will pour out God’s Spirit on ALL people.

Too often we get stuck in trying to “figure out” who is in or out. But the Spirit, like the wind, doesn’t seem to be as interested in human limitations. The Spirit wants to set us free.

Pray

Holy Spirit, set us free from the ways we try to limit your presence and keep others out. Give us the vision to see your presence in all people. Amen.
