Ordinary Time

Pause

Is it wind?
Is it breath?
Is it Spirit?

Calling out around me
Hovering across the waters

Making all things live
Making all things new
Making all things sing

Listen

In the same way, the Spirit comes to help our weakness. We don’t know what we should pray, but the Spirit himself pleads our case with unexpressed groans. The one who searches hearts knows how the Spirit thinks, because he pleads for the saints, consistent with God’s will.

Romans 8:26-27

Think

Sometimes the best way to get a room full of students to be quiet is to ask who would like to pray. No one, it seems, wants to be the voice of prayer for the whole group. As simple as prayer can be, praying makes one vulnerable before God and others.

Even when we are alone, prayer can sometimes be challenging. We don’t know the right way to pray. Some of us fret over getting the words right. Others go a whole day and entirely forget to pray.

The disciples once came up to Jesus and asked him to teach them how to pray. This suggests that they also struggled with prayer; they were looking for help. Scripture promises that the Spirit is our helper when it comes to prayer.

There are times when it seems we have no words to pray. Here the Spirit comes in. Unknown to us the Spirit could be praying through us, for us, and in us. In God’s grace our lives are constantly surrounded by prayer.

Pray

Holy Spirit, pray through me today, even when I do not know the words to say. Stay near to my heart and speak through me. Amen.
