Ordinary Time

Be quick, you must be strong
Life is full of wonder
Love is never wrong

“Silent Legacy” by Melissa Etheridge

Listen

Let the sea and everything in it roar; the world and all its inhabitants too. Let all the rivers clap their hands; let the mountains rejoice out loud altogether before the Lord because he is coming to establish justice on the earth! He will establish justice in the world rightly; he will establish justice among all people fairly.

Psalm 98:7-9

Think

I once visited Juarez, Mexico just across the border from El Paso, Texas. Although the city has a tough history, it’s quite a beautiful place. A large mountain rests next to the city. Along its side there is a giant inscription painted upon its rocky face. You can see it from just about anywhere in the area: “Juarez, la biblia es la verdad. Leela,” which means, “Juarez, the Bible is the truth. Read it.” I’ve seen religious messages before, but nothing so large as this. The first time I gazed at that mountainside, I couldn’t help but to be in a state of awe and wonder. A community that has been riddled with hardships for decades continues to be reminded that truth is found in God’s word.

As this mountain rejoices in God’s word, may it remind you that no matter how difficult a city, a school, a neighborhood may be, God is always seeking justice. Seek the truth in God’s word, and may it fill you with awe and wonder.

Question to Ponder:

How can you work for justice in your own community?

Pray

Mighty God, continue to speak truth to me through your word. May that truth guide me toward justice, compassion, and hope for a better tomorrow.

Amen.
