While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit fell on everyone who heard the word. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. They heard them speaking in other languages and praising God. Peter asked, “These people have received the Holy Spirit just as we have. Surely no one can stop them from being baptized with water, can they?” He directed that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they invited Peter to stay for several days.

As we grow up, we learn so many things through our parents, teachers, and other grown-ups telling us what NOT to do. When we start to drive, we’re bombarded with signs all along the roads that say, “Do not enter,” “Caution,” “Danger,” “Do not pass,” “No turn on red.” It seems like so much of life is about avoiding things, staying within boundaries and restricted areas.

When it comes to approaching God, there are no barriers. Religious or not, worthy or not, perfect or not, God welcomes us because God’s arms are wider than we can imagine. Love and grace are given freely without borders, limits, or restrictions. In Peter’s time, there were questions on who could be baptized. When Peter and his colleagues saw that the Holy Spirit fell upon everyone, they realized God’s love could not be limited.

Whenever you hear God’s word, remember it’s for you. The Spirit is with you because God’s love comes without exceptions.
