Ordinary Time
Be quick, you must be strong
Life is full of wonder
Love is never wrong
“Silent Legacy” by Melissa Etheridge
This is my commandment: love each other just as I have loved you. No one has greater love than to give up one’s life for one’s friends.
John 15:12-13
I remember swimming with my brother once before I was a strong enough swimmer to go without a lifejacket.
A small trampoline appeared and was placed on the edge of the pool near the deep end. I felt like I was flying as I jumped off the trampoline into the water. So fun!
After lunch, I was eager to return to the pool and the trampoline, so eager that I forgot to put back on my lifejacket. I ran to the pool and, without thinking, jumped off the trampoline into the water. I quickly realized that I was without my lifejacket, and I began to panic and scream. Suddenly, arms grabbed me and started pulling me to the pool’s edge—it was my brother. While he could swim, he unknowingly was risking harm for himself to save me. I’m grateful he did.
Jesus says the greatest love we can give to another is risky and sacrificial. Thanks be to God for those who risk life, heath, and harm on our behalf out of love.

Question to Ponder:
What are some big and small ways we might sacrifice for those we love?
Faithful God, for Jesus and for those who love me and sacrifice so much so that I can know your love, I give you thanks.
Amen.
