Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ on my right, Christ on my left, Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down.

from the Prayer of St. Patrick

Listen

Hurry, God, to deliver me; hurry, Lord, to help me!

Psalm 70:1

Think

Scripture tells us that God is always near, but there are still times when we feel alone. We all go through difficult times. Sometimes people hurt us with words or actions, or we hurt ourselves and others with our words or actions. Sometimes we face sickness, money troubles, or problems in our relationships. Sometimes we worry about school or our jobs, and sometimes we feel anxious for no reason we can understand.

It is good to remember that God’s people have always called out for God’s presence. The ancient Hebrews lived lives very different from ours, but the psalms are evidence that they also struggled with feeling alone and afraid. They learned to ask for God’s help, and they were not shy about it. They said, “Hurry up, God! Help us now!”

God gave us help in the person of Jesus Christ, and when he left the earth, the Holy Spirit came to help us remember that we are united with Christ. We can call out to God, knowing that the Spirit will always answer.

Question to Ponder:

When was the last time you called upon God for help? How did it turn out?’

Pray

Dear God, deliver me!

When I am afraid, don’t waste any time. Hurry and help.

And help me trust that you never leave me.

Go

I’m convinced that nothing can separate us from God’s love in Christ Jesus our Lord: not death or life, not angels or rulers, not present things or future things, not powers or height or depth, or any other thing that is created.
