Pause

We are all called to be followers of Christ. Being a follower brings wonder and insight, comfort and peace, but it also brings challenges and encourages us to see the world in new and startling ways.

Following is a daily decision to join our risen Lord on the path to which we are invited. It is a decision to open ourselves to both the wonder and the challenge.

Now is the time to decide. A new, startling view of the world awaits.

Listen

The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; I have a goodly heritage. I bless the Lord who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart instructs me. I keep the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. Therefore my heart is glad, and my soul rejoices; my body also rests secure. You show me the path of life. In your presence there is fullness of joy; in your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

Psalm 16:5-9, 11

Think

I have always been a devoted morning person, and I can’t help but feel that today’s psalm was written for the morning.

In the summer, I love to wake up as the sun is rising, pour myself a huge, deliciously aromatic cup of coffee, feed my dog, and sit on the swing out on the back porch. There is something inherently sacred about the way the sunlight makes the dew on the grass sparkle as well as the natural, unbounded joy of my dog romping around the yard in his excitement. The day is holy to me.

We all have holy moments like this, moments where we just want to read today’s psalm over and over again. The psalm comes to life in the holiness of such moments. These are the moments we need to look for, the moments we need to search out and then be fully present in, enjoying the comfort and joy that come from following Christ.

Pray

Life-giving God, you show me the path of life. In your presence I find the fullness of joy. In your right hand are pleasures forevermore. Amen.

Following means commitment to a way that is sometime clear,
And sometimes vague.
There is no assurance that you will always know certainty,
But you will surely know this:

The One you follow will always be with you,
Just ahead of you, offering in every moment,
In darkness and in light,
The invitation.
