“Do not permit the ways of this world to mold and shape you. Instead, let Creator change you from the inside out, in the way a caterpillar becomes a butterfly.”

Romans 12:2a, First Nations Version

Listen

Moses came down from Mount Sinai. As he came down from the mountain with the two covenant tablets in his hand, Moses didn’t realize that the skin of his face shone brightly because he had been talking with God. When Aaron and all the Israelites saw the skin of Moses’ face shining brightly, they were afraid to come near him.

Exodus 34:29-30

Think

I have a few favorite emojis. One is the drooling face that communicates how yummy something tastes. Another is the familiar laugh out loud emoji. Still another is the smiley face with the cool sunglasses. As silly as these examples may be, faces communicate so much more than words alone. Our brains are wired to notice how people’s faces communicate emotions and other information.

Faces tell a story.

After Moses encountered God and received the Ten Commandments, it’s said his face was shining. His face told the story of someone who had a transforming experience with God. This experience changed the appearance of his face. Everyone could see it, and they were afraid. This fear was less about how Moses looked, and more about their own fear of change. Change can be scary, but it is also an invitation to grow. As we grow spiritually, our faces (and lives!) begin to reflect the light of God.

Question to Ponder:

What kind of story is my face telling today?

Pray

God, in talking with you, I am changed. I trust that I am seen and known and loved by you. Even when change is scary, you are always with me. Amen.

Go

Wherever you go, God is still present.

Wherever you look, God’s light still shines.

Wherever you listen, God is still speaking there too,

Inviting you to change from the inside out,

Showing you that you are made to shine.
