“Do not permit the ways of this world to mold and shape you. Instead, let Creator change you from the inside out, in the way a caterpillar becomes a butterfly.”

Romans 12:2a, First Nations Version

Listen

Whenever Moses went into the Lord’s presence to speak with him, Moses would take the veil off until he came out again. When Moses came out and told the Israelites what he had been commanded, the Israelites would see that the skin of Moses’ face was shining brightly. So Moses would put the veil on his face again until the next time he went in to speak with the Lord.

Exodus 34:34-35

Think

After Sunday morning worship this past Advent, a child came up to me and asked why I was wearing a robe and a purple stole. I explained that the robe shows those worshipping that I am ordained—a messenger of God—and that the color of the stole communicates the current season of the church year. When I’m performing music, I wear clothes that make me look like I’m the singer for a band.

You probably have clothes that communicate things about you too. A volleyball uniform. Nice clothes for your chorus performance. A hat that represents your favorite sports team. Maybe you cover your water bottle with stickers of all your favorite things.

Because Moses’ face shined after talking with God, he began wearing a cloth or veil over his face to show the people when he was speaking with them. When talking to God he would take the veil off. His clothing communicated when he was talking with people and when he was talking with God.

Question to Ponder:

In addition to clothing, what are some other ways that people can notice our relationship with God?

Pray

God, in relating to you, I learn to relate to others. Help me communicate your goodness to others in words and actions. Amen.

Go

Wherever you go, God is still present.

Wherever you look, God’s light still shines.

Wherever you listen, God is still speaking there too,

Inviting you to change from the inside out,

Showing you that you are made to shine.
