Ordinary Time

“Do not permit the ways of this world to mold and shape you. Instead, let Creator change you from the inside out, in the way a caterpillar becomes a butterfly.”

Romans 12:2a, First Nations Version

Listen

The Lord is the Spirit, and where the Lord’s Spirit is, there is freedom. All of us are looking with unveiled faces at the glory of the Lord as if we were looking in a mirror. We are being transformed into that same image from one degree of glory to the next degree of glory. This comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

2 Corinthians 3:17-18

Think

Sometimes we think encountering God is something reserved for a select few specially enlightened people. A monk or nun praying at multiple times a day. A saint who changed the world. Or even the Son of God. It’s easy to think there are some “special” people who are more attuned to the spiritual life than everyday people like you and me.

While the biblical story is full of exceptional characters, most of the time they are normal people who are willing to let God act in their lives. A little boy like Samuel hears God’s voice and responds. A teenage girl like Mary is told she will bear God’s son and boldly proclaims what God has done. This passage in 2 Corinthians reminds us that every single one of us has access to God, and we are being transformed in God’s image. The ordinary are extraordinary in the eyes of God.

Question to Ponder:

When you look in the mirror, what are some ways you notice God’s image?

Pray

God, you made me in your image. Continue to shine your light on me that I may reflect your joy and hope to those around me. Amen.

Go

Wherever you go, God is still present.

Wherever you look, God’s light still shines.

Wherever you listen, God is still speaking there too,

Inviting you to change from the inside out,

Showing you that you are made to shine.
