Journey to the Cross

Pause

Take a moment to close your eyes and think of something different… a place, a feeling, a particular song that reminds you of God’s love.

Listen

“Stop collecting treasures for your own benefit on earth, where moth and rust eat them and where thieves break in and steal them. Instead, collect treasures for yourselves in heaven, where moth and rust don’t eat them and where thieves don’t break in and steal them. Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Matthew 6:19-21

Think

The Greek word Jesus uses to speak of riches in this passage is thēsaurós. It can refer to material treasures, such as gold, silver, jewelry, and earthly possessions, but it can also speak of spiritual treasures, such as faith, righteousness, and our relationship with God. What is interesting is that this word sounds very similar to thesaurus, which is a dictionary of synonyms and antonyms. A curious thing is that a word that used to mean treasure” is now used to refer to an accumulated knowledge of words.

Normally, we do not think of words as riches. However, when we read Jesus’ warning in this passage, it invites us to reflect on what the true treasures of heaven are. And, without a doubt, the word of God is one of those riches. It keeps us connected to God both on earth and in heaven. God’s teachings, best revealed in Jesus Christ, are a priceless treasure that enriches our hearts and demonstrates to the world where our loyalty and devotion lie.

Question to Ponder:

How can you begin to value spiritual riches more in your daily life?

Pray

God, in a world that tells us to hoard things, help me to remember that the greatest treasure is your word. May my security be in you and not in what I possess. I entrust my life and my desires to you. Amen.

Go

Close your eyes and take a deep breath.

God’s forgiveness fills us with peace.

When you go out, share that peace with others.
