Ordinary Time

Pause

Every night I lie in bed
The brightest colors fill my head
A million dreams are keeping me awake
I think of what the world could be
A vision of the one I see
A million dreams is all it’s gonna take
Oh a million dreams for the world we’re gonna make

from “A Million Dreams” in The Greatest Showman (2017)

Listen

Let the sea and everything in it roar; the world and all its inhabitants too. Let all the rivers clap their hands; let the mountains rejoice out loud altogether before the Lord because he is coming to establish justice on the earth! He will establish justice in the world rightly; he will establish justice among all people fairly.

Psalm 98:7-9

Think

Everybody clap your hands! (Go ahead, clap your hands.) Our scripture for today feels like a party — everyone is celebrating, everything is rejoicing. The ocean and all its creatures are roaring. The rivers are clapping, the mountains rejoicing. The whole world and every living thing — roaring, rejoicing, celebrating. What a party!

The whole celebration is about God’s justice. We often think of justice as fairness. It is so much bigger than that. Justice is when all life can thrive. No more crying, no more hurt, no more fear. People live at peace with each other. We care for creation instead of destroying it. We look out for others instead of always trying to get ahead of everyone else. Everyone has enough food, clothing, and shelter. Everyone has enough love, hope, and peace.

This is a little picture of God’s future justice, God’s dreams for the world. These are big dreams, dreams of what can be, God’s dreams for us and all of creation. Let’s join in God’s dreams here and now, right where we are.

Pray

Dreaming God, open my heart to your dreams for the world.

Open my eyes to ways I can work toward your dreams even now.

Amen.

The world is not as it should be, not as it could be, not as it will be.

Trust God’s dreams for you and the world around you.

Dream with God of what could be…
