Journey to the Cross
Take a moment to set this time apart. Light a candle, turn on some quiet music, get comfortable in your space, or simply take some time in quiet before you begin.
I thank you because you answered me, because you were my saving help. The stone rejected by the builders is now the main foundation stone! This has happened because of the Lord; it is astounding in our sight! This is the day the Lord acted; we will rejoice and celebrate in it!
Lord, please save us! Lord, please let us succeed!
Psalm 118:21-25
“The stone rejected by the builders is now the main foundation stone.” What a powerful image presented in this psalm. God used the stone that had been rejected. God not only uses it but builds the whole foundation upon this stone. What does that say about God, that God builds the foundation on the rejected, the thrown out, the discarded?
I am moved by this image when I am feeling discouraged, that no matter where I find myself or what has happened, God will use me. It also points to a greater truth about who God is. God cares especially for the most vulnerable, oppressed, and despised. This leads us to challenge any system or authority which rejects or diminishes the humanity of God’s people. God’s logic defies the logic of the world, and it is “astounding in our sight.” It is reason to rejoice and to celebrate and to give praise to God.

Question to Ponder:
When have you been surprised by something God has done?
God, help me to be surprised, astounded by your presence. Help me to be amazed by what you are doing in the world. Help me to celebrate and rejoice in the goodness in all people.
Amen.
Go and sing loud and dance wild,
speak truth and stand strong,
hold beauty in your heart,
love hard and be soft,
make mistakes and say you’re sorry,
and try always to be you,
because all of life is a hymn singing God’s praise.
