Ordinary Time
Take a deep breath. Take one more.
Be present at this moment.
Be prepared to let go of false standards of happiness.
Get ready to explore and embrace God’s true happiness.
Those whose way is blameless—who walk in the Lord’s Instruction—are truly happy! Those who guard God’s laws are truly happy! They seek God with all their hearts. They don’t even do anything wrong! They walk in God’s ways. God, you have ordered that your decrees should be kept most carefully. How I wish my ways were strong when it comes to keeping your statutes! Then I wouldn’t be ashamed when I examine all your commandments. I will give thanks to you with a heart that does right as I learn your righteous rules. I will keep your statutes. Please don’t leave me all alone!
Psalm 119:1-8
When we read today’s psalm, it can be easy to focus on ideas like being blameless, not doing anything wrong. When we allow attention to rest on these ideas, we may get discouraged and feel unprepared for the task. None of us are blameless; no one does everything right.
When we read the psalm carefully and look beyond being blameless or not doing anything wrong, we recognize we need God. The challenge of doing right is exhausting and difficult. The writer of the psalm understands this difficulty and cries out to God for strength and presence.
With God’s guidance, we can live in a way that makes us truly happy. This happiness is not a result of our perfection or uprightness. This happiness comes from realizing that God loves us, empowers us, forgives us, and is always with us. Now it is on us to spread this upside-down happiness.
James Blay
Ever-present God, help me remember not to lose myself in pursuing perfection.
Help me do my best to follow your instructions so I may experience true happiness — the happiness that only comes from your love and presence.
Amen.
Spread the word; a different standard of happiness is available for everyone.
