Ordinary Time

Pause

If I said, “The darkness will definitely hide me;

the light will become night around me,”

even then the darkness isn’t too dark for you!

Nighttime would shine bright as day,

because darkness is the same as light to you!

Psalm 139:11-12

Listen

Jesus traveled among all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, announcing the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness. Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he had compassion for them because they were troubled and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The size of the harvest is bigger than you can imagine, but there are few workers. Therefore, plead with the Lord of the harvest to send out workers for his harvest.”

Matthew 9:35-38

Think

It stinks being sick. A couple of years ago I was bedridden with COVID. I had a stomachache, dizziness, an intense headache. I wanted to do nothing except lie down in the dark.

The sickness infected my body – and my whole life! I missed class, work, and plans with friends. I stayed in my room to keep my roommates from getting sick. It was difficult to do anything.

Sometimes I feel this way in my spiritual life as well. I feel spiritually “sick” when I haven’t spent time in prayer or in the Word. It is difficult to do anything when I forget that God is in control.

As Jesus traveled, he healed “every disease and every sickness.” Every person was set free from affliction at the loving hand of Jesus. It’s tough in the midst of our struggles, whether physical or spiritual. But Jesus sees us when we feel “troubled and helpless.”
