Ordinary Time

Pause

If I said, “The darkness will definitely hide me;

the light will become night around me,”

even then the darkness isn’t too dark for you!

Nighttime would shine bright as day,

because darkness is the same as light to you!

Psalm 139:11-12

Listen

What can I give back to the Lord for all the good things he has done for me?

I’ll lift up the cup of salvation. I’ll call on the Lord’s name.

I’ll keep the promises I made to the Lord in the presence of all God’s people.

Psalm 116:12-14

Think

When I was a child, we used to sing songs before Sunday School. One of our leaders brought her guitar and led us in songs about God and stories from the Bible. One song, called, “Great Things,” began like this, “The Lord has done great things for us, and thus we are glad.” We then would list all the wonderful things God made, including “trees, trails, and waggy puppy tails.”

Today’s psalm invites us to consider what we can give back to the Lord in return for all the “great things” the Lord has done. The question is rhetorical: there is nothing we can give to match what God has done. We want to give back to God, nonetheless.

What better way than to give God our praises! We should rejoice because of all the great things God has done for us. “We are glad” when we think of God’s vast mercy and grace.

Go and see the world as God sees you.
