Ordinary Time

Pause

Tick. Tick. Tick. That’s the clock. Measuring time in seconds, minutes, hours, days… Time that we schedule and manage and spend. The Ancient Greek word for this time is chronos.

Take a minute to feel the chronos passing by.

But there is another kind of time. It’s the right moment for the right action. It’s God’s time – and our time with God. It’s when Eternity meets our experience. The Greek word for this sense of time kairos.

Breathe in and out, sensing God’s presence, and enter into kairos – knowing that God has words you need to hear today.

Listen

“Now after a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them. The one who had received five valuable coins came forward with five additional coins. He said, ‘Master, you gave me five valuable coins. Look, I’ve gained five more.’

“His master replied, ‘Excellent! You are a good and faithful servant! You’ve been faithful over a little. I’ll put you in charge of much. Come, celebrate with me.’

“The second servant also came forward and said, ‘Master, you gave me two valuable coins. Look, I’ve gained two more.’

“His master replied, ‘Well done! You are a good and faithful servant. You’ve been faithful over a little. I’ll put you in charge of much. Come, celebrate with me.’”

Matthew 25:19-23

Think

Generosity. Joy. Giving. Receiving. Sharing. The “investor” servants in today’s passage received their generous “endowments” joyfully and “grew” them. Their investments for their boss were a way of saying “thank you.” They were also a way to share their efforts with him when he returned. And that pleased him. He gave them promotions and invited them to celebrate.

Are you good at a particular sport? Are you a musician? Dancer? Artist? Photographer? Do you learn languages easily? Is math intuitive to you? These are talents, but they also demand skill and practice. You may start with a passion or a talent, but to really make it outstanding, you must work at it too. This is your investment.

Sometimes this is how God directs us toward our future. God can use our gifts to call us to a career in which we will serve God joyfully. What makes you happiest? What are you good at? Maybe God is leading you to use those joys and skills in a future that will please both you and God.

Pray

God, thank you for giving me interests I’m good at, even when I may not recognize them. Help me to see where and how you are guiding me to develop my gifts and skills so that I may serve you today and in the future. Guide me on my path, Lord. Give me purpose and help me to feel you close by. Amen.

Go

Thank God for today.

Open yourself to God’s surprises.

Do what is most important.

Accept that you can’t do everything.

You are blessed and loved.
