Ordinary Time

Pause

Tick. Tick. Tick. That’s the clock. Measuring time in seconds, minutes, hours, days… Time that we schedule and manage and spend. The Ancient Greek word for this time is chronos.

Take a minute to feel the chronos passing by.

But there is another kind of time. It’s the right moment for the right action. It’s God’s time – and our time with God. It’s when Eternity meets our experience. The Greek word for this sense of time kairos.

Breathe in and out, sensing God’s presence, and enter into kairos – knowing that God has words you need to hear today.

Listen

“His master replied, ‘You evil and lazy servant! You knew that I harvest grain where I haven’t sown and that I gather crops where I haven’t spread seed? In that case, you should have turned my money over to the bankers so that when I returned, you could give me what belonged to me with interest. Therefore, take from him the valuable coin and give it to the one who has ten coins.”

Matthew 25:26-28

Think

Servant #3 was afraid of doing what he knew was right: investing for his master. The irony is, he got what he feared. Back then, putting the money in the ground was considered a safe, risk-free way to save.

There’s the key: risk-free. Has fear ever prevented you from doing what you knew was right? Ever been afraid to defend someone because you thought you’d be targeted too? What about taking an unpopular stand on an issue? Have you been hesitant to try a new sport or take a class that was “out of your comfort zone?” Fear can cause us to miss opportunities to grow and discover things we love. Life involves risks. And following Jesus is not risk-free, but it is so worth it!

How will you invest your time today for the Master? Will you be willing to set aside your plans to help someone who needs you? Will you risk speaking out against injustice? Will your actions show God’s love? How will you manage today’s time for the Lord?

Pray

Oh Lord, help me to invest my time boldly and fearlessly today for you. Help me not be afraid to do what I know is right or to step out of my comfort zone to follow you. I know you will lead me and walk with me. Amen.

Go

Thank God for today.

Open yourself to God’s surprises.

Do what is most important.

Accept that you can’t do everything.

You are blessed and loved.
