Pause

We live with so much light around, it's hard to imagine a world in total darkness. We are used to everything being illuminated.

The life of the spirit can be quite different, however. We can ignore what is revealed and turn our inner eyes away from the truth.

Take just a moment now to turn your attention to the Spirit that has something for you to see, something new for you to know.

Listen

The word that Isaiah son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. In days to come the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be raised above the hills; all the nations shall stream to it. Many peoples shall come and say, “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths.” For out of Zion shall go forth instruction, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.

Isaiah 2:1-3

Think

Imagine this: all the nations of the world come to agree with one another that there is one message, one ideal that stands above all others. So they rush to join with one another in not only agreeing about this, but to help one another live out their newfound ideal to the fullest.

It is hard to imagine, isn’t it? Our experience, both within nations and among them, is that agreement – just getting along – seems almost impossible. The Biblical image of nation rising against nation is much easier to see – in our minds and in every day’s news reports.

The Bible gives us hard-to-picture scenarios all the time. And these ideal images reflect the holy idea God wants us to see – that we all would get along and even love one another. It may be difficult to imagine, but God wants us to know that it is not impossible. And one day we will see it.

Pray

God, help me to imagine today what life could be like for everyone if we would just find a way to first get along with one another. Help me to believe the ideal that you already have in mind. Amen.

Go

Wake up from your sleep, climb out of your coffins; Christ will show you the light! So watch your step. Use your head. Make the most of every chance you get. These are desperate times!
